Newly Discovered Earthworks in Sutton Park

Sutton Park has a number of earthworks, ranging from banks and ditches, to a Roman Road and we have investigated a number of these.

At our January 2005 meeting we undertook the first ever survey of some newly discovered earthworks near Bracebridge Pool.

These earthworks were discovered recently when some gorse was cleared. They comprise a square ditch approximately 28x28m but the ditch follows an irregular path. A number of other ditches and ancient paths are to be found nearby.

The ditch was very shallow and while it could be quite easily seen from close up it was difficult to see the whole of the ditch from any position.

So that we could create a picture of the whole earthwork we split into two teams we measured the distance to both banks of the ditch from a baseline that ran through the centre of the earthworks.

We then plotted the points on graph paper to reveal the overall shape of the earthworks.
