Birmingham Back to Backs
We
visited the Birmingham
Back to Backs. These unusual houses are divided down the middle
- they were saved by the National Trust when they realised they
were the last ones left in Birmingham.
Thousands of houses like these were built, literally back to
back, around courtyards, for the rapidly increasing population
of Britain's expanding industrial towns. They were inhabited from
1840 to the 1970s.
The tour was fascinating and the story of the site was told through
the experiences of the people who lived and worked there. We especially
liked the glass eye collection and the traditional sweet shop.
